How this calculator works

This tool uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, widely considered one of the most accurate formulas for estimating Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) for the general population. Your BMR is then multiplied by an activity factor to estimate your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE).

Frequently asked questions

What is BMR?

Basal Metabolic Rate is the number of calories your body needs at complete rest just to keep vital functions running, such as breathing and circulation.

What is TDEE?

Total Daily Energy Expenditure is your BMR multiplied by an activity factor, giving the total calories you burn in a typical day including exercise and daily movement.

How many calories should I cut to lose weight?

A common approach is a deficit of about 500 calories per day from your TDEE, which tends to produce roughly 0.5 kg of weight loss per week.
